Who doesn’t need a little boost of empowerment when putting up their hair to get down to it? This particular knot design is protective, and thought to be commonly used on shields for battle and display. The four arms are representative of the elements, the directions, the seasons, or even the four gifts of the Tuatha: the cauldron, the sword, the spear, and the stone. Shield knots were talismans for protection against evil spirits, disease, and other misfortunes of life. The Celtic shield knot is a closed one and does not have any open ends, it can be said to represent unity as well eternity. This knot work is further encircled citing the unity of all things, our connection to the oneness of all things, and the eternal nature of these things.
This shield is encircled by beautifully ornate detailing not once, but twice. It also features an ancient Celtic symbol of the Sun in the centre of the shield, adding warmth and strength from the power of the Sun to the energy of this comb. Sterling silver comb has been work hardened, but still has that bit of spring and plyability to it to make pinning your hair easy and intuitive.
Made entirely with sterling silver and by my hand, this piece measures 4.5 inches in length and 2 inches wide.
