Celtic Shield Cuff – In ancient times shields were significant in Celtic culture. Celts used them in their rituals, religious and cultural practices, as well as in battle. On the battlefield they were utilized for protection and even as weapons. When used in ceremony or as votive offerings they became sacred items. Shields were typically created with designs, especially ornate ones, depicting connecting swirls, circles, and often the Celtic knot work we know today. The Celtic shield knot was mainly used as a symbol of protection, both physical and spiritual. It wasย believed the symbol provided spiritual protection against evil spirits, so it was also placed near people who were sick.
This particular knot design is protective, and thought to be commonly used on shields for battle and display. The four arms are representative of the elements, the directions, the seasons, or even the four gifts of the Tuatha: the cauldron, the sword, the spear, and the stone. Shield knots were talismans for protection against evil spirits, disease, and other misfortunes of life. The Celtic shield knot is a closed one and does not have any open ends, it can be said to represent unity as well eternity. This knot work is further encircled citing the unity of all things, our connection to the oneness of all things, and the eternal nature of these things.
This shield is encircled by two different layers of full moons, with two individual moons set on the outer perimeter. This homage to Luna in Her greatest fullness, at the height of Her power, summons a deep connection to Her and the potency of Her silvery light which illuminates what lurks in the shadows in the darkness of night. We are empowered to โsee in the darkness,โ whether that be our own shadowy aspects that need integrating or the dark bits in the collective, institutions, norms, culture that have been woven into our personal tapestry and call to us to investigate. This bracelet is a tangible reminder of the promise to the Warrioress that the hard work we do is never in vain, and liberation awaits on the other side.
Every detail of this bracelet is created from sterling silver by my hand. The cuff measures 6 inches with a 1 inch gap.
