Shields were typically created with designs, especially ornate ones, depicting connecting swirls, circles, and often the Celtic knot work we know today. The Celtic shield knot was mainly used as a symbol of protection, both physical and spiritual. It was believed the symbol provided spiritual protection against evil spirits, so it was also placed near people who were sick.
